Poll: Half of the respondents in Europe and the United States believes that a key role in the victory over Nazism in World War II belonged to the US

MOSCOW, May 5 - RIA Novosti. The vast majority of residents of France, Germany, Great Britain and the United States seriously underestimate the role of the USSR in the victory over Nazism in World War II, according to the survey conducted within the project Sputnik.Mneniya.

On average, only 15% of British, French, Americans and Germans believe that the Soviet Union played a key role in the victory over Nazism in World War II, company data show IFop. Half of the respondents (50%) believe that a key role was played by the United States. The respondents were asked to name a country that has played a key role in the victory over Nazism in World War II.

The greatest number of respondents who recognize the key role of the USSR in the victory over Nazism, living in Germany (24%), the difference between the Western and Eastern part of the substantial: 16% in West Germany, against 55% in the East and 35% in Berlin.

In France, 27% of supporters of the coalition “Left Front” are aware of the role of the USSR in the victory over Nazi Germany, against 12% on average in France. Respondents who during the presidential elections in 2012 voted in favor of co-chairman of the “Left Front” Jean-Luc Melanshona much more inclined to recognize the role of the Soviet Union: 26% vs. 12% on average in the country.

Ifop According to data for 1945, while 57% of French people believed that the Soviet Union played the most important role in the victory over Nazism.

The survey also revealed that Europeans are seriously underestimating the contribution of the Soviet Union in the liberation of Europe: only 13% of respondents as a whole said that the Soviet Union played a key role in the liberation of Europe from Nazism.

The survey polled 3,036 respondents participated in the UK (1045), USA (1002), Germany (989), France (1008). The sample is representative of the population by sex, age and geography. The maximum sampling error for the data in the whole country is ± 3,1% at 95% confidence level.
