Exactly 35 years ago, the US imposed sanctions against the Soviet Union, forbidden to sell any high-tech products because of the war in Afghanistan

After World War II, when the world was bipolar, the US and its allies are trying to influence the USSR by various methods, including economic ones. In particular, in 1949, was based CoCom (CoCom) - an international organization of NATO, which controlled the export to the Soviet Union and the countries of the socialist camp.

The participants were drawn up lists of banned export of goods - weapons, high-tech equipment, technologies related to nuclear energy, and industrial dual-use goods.

These recommendations are acted until the collapse of the Soviet Union, although in fact they took the form of sanctions. And joined them not only NATO, but also with Australia, Japan. However, some private companies such as Toshiba Machine Company, the bans were not paying attention, and secretly from colleagues and competitors continued to deliver high-precision equipment to the Soviet Union. In addition, the US and its allies are trying to hit the oil and gas industry of the Soviet Union. To this end, NATO has imposed an embargo on the supply of pipes, which were necessary for the supply of gas to Europe. All this happened in 1962, when the world’s attention was focused on the apocalyptic, but still allowed to the Caribbean crisis.

The issue with the pipes as a result decided “mnogohodovochki” - Soviet Union suggested not to buy them, and exchanged for gas.

Thus the deal “gas - pipe” has joined the UK, for her - Italy and then Germany, with which the Soviet Union and all signed a contract for 20 years with the delivery of up to 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

The next step against the Soviet Union was the adoption by the US Congress in 1974, the Jackson - Vanik amendment, according to which the United States restrict trade with countries that violate human rights. Then, under the amendment fell and the Soviet Union. With regard to his successor - Russia - the amendment was repealed only in 2012. Now the amendment applies, for example, against Belarus.

But one amendment were not limited to the United States - when the USSR carried out the invasion of Afghanistan, Jimmy Carter announced a ban on the sale of any technology to the Soviet Union. By virtue of it came exactly 35 years ago - March 18, 1980. Thus, the Soviet Union was left without a lot of useful things, such as a computer Apple II Plus, created by Steve Jobs with Steve Wozniak. However, in the Soviet Union from that no one was hurt, and his cult status, Apple at the time had not yet acquired.

In addition, within the United States to counter the Soviet Union refused to open a consulate in Kiev, not knowing what will happen in Ukraine after many years.
