Russian students are inferior to foreign peers in knowledge

Russian ninth grade students lag behind their peers from countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), to which Russia is going to join, on such basic school subjects such as math, reading and science.

Undisputed leader, demonstrating the strongest knowledge and skills students are from East Asia (China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea). This is evidenced by the results of the OECD study “Programme for International Student Assessment” (PISA) in 2012.

The survey covered 65 countries, including 34 countries of the OECD - a “club” the most economically developed countries. Schoolchildren aged 15 years 3 months to 16 years 2 months was proposed test consisting of various questions and tasks (with an emphasis on math). The findings are published today.

Average Russian students in mathematics was 482, Reading - 475, science - 486. This is lower than the average recruited students in OECD countries (494, 496 and 501 respectively).

Absolute leader ranking Chinese students began (as tested in schools in Shanghai), scored 613 points in mathematics, 570 - Reading and 580 - for scientific literacy. At the top of the table for the quality of secondary education are also Singapore, Hong Kong (China), Taiwan, South Korea, Macao (China) and Japan, followed by the Western countries such as Liechtenstein, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Finland and Canada.

The U.S. is in the middle of the list, behind the OECD average level of mathematical literacy (481 score, in Russia - 482) and showing comparable results with the OECD in reading and science.

International Programme for Student Assessment (Programme for International Student Assessment, PISA) - a test that assesses literacy students in different countries and their ability to apply knowledge in practice. It is held once every three years.
